“Road to Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games” – South Africa

  • Reading time:5 mins read

In October 2021, the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF) will host the WDSF World Breaking Championships in Nanjing, China. This will serve as an official qualifier event ahead of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 where Breaking will debut at the Games.

In preparation for the WDSF World Breaking Championships, DanceSport South Africa (DSSA), the local WDSF member body, has been tasked with the function of hosting a National qualifier to select the male and female representatives for South Africa at the global event. To ensure the success of this process, DanceSport South Africa has created the “DSSA Breaking Task Team”, assembling members of our local breaking community to work closely with DSSA as facilitators and advisors.

The DSSA Breaking Task Team aims to create a fair and equal opportunity for all to be participants in the qualification process for the WDSF World Breaking Championships, and ensure that the culture of Hip Hop and Breaking is well represented throughout the qualification events.

The DSSA Task Team members were selected via a process of calling on members of the local dance and breaking community to apply for the volunteer administrative positions. DSSA’s executive board then selected 5 applicants best suited to the Task Team’s functions and responsibilities. The 5 community members will work alongside the DSSA executive members in designing the infrastructure and the processes required for the WDSF World Champs Qualifiers and Olympic Qualifier events.

The DSSA Breaking Task Team Members:

– Thabo Phiri (President of DSSA)

– Craig Bullock (Development Director of DSSA)

– Sho Mshengu (Secretary of DSSA)

– Angelo Van Wyk aka DJ Thee Angelo (BBoy, DJ, Event Host – Hood Hop Africa / Black Noise)

– Anuq Wilson aka Anuqlear Bomb (Dancer, Teacher, Adjudicator)

– Any competitor hoping to represent SA on the Olympic stage is required to qualify via the DSSA and SASCOC endorsed events.

– The top 2 male, and female competitors at the qualifier events will be issued with Protea Colours by DSSA, endorsed by SASCOC, and be eligible to represent South Africa at the WDSF World Breaking Championship events.

– The SA National representative will be competing against the best in the world at the WDSF World championships, where they will have a chance to earn WDSF World Breaking Championship ranking points and over the course of the next 3 years, earn points toward qualifying as a World Top 16 finalist who will represent their nations at the Summer Olympic Games in 2024.

– All qualifier events are subject to the local government restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and may necessitate the use of an online qualification process. Details and Format of this online method of qualification will be disclosed, as and when necessary.
